چکیده

UVES and HIRES high-resolution spectra of comet 9P/Tempel 1 are used to investigate the impact and rotational light curves of various species with a view toward building a simple model of the distribution and activity of the sources. The emission by OH, NH, CN, C3, CH, C2, NH2 and O I, are analyzed, as well as the light scattered by the dust. It is found that a simple model reproduces fairly well the impact lightcurves of all species combining the production of the observed molecules and the expansion of the material throughout the slit. The impact light curves are consistent with velocities of 400–600 m/s. Their modelling requires a three-step dissociation sequence “Grand-Parent→ Parent → Daughter” to produce the observed molecules. The rotational light curve for each species is explained in terms of a single model with three sources. The dust component can however not easily be explained that way.

Spectropolarimetry of the Deep Impact target, comet 9P/ Tempel 1, was performed during the impact event on July 4th, 2005 with the HiVIS Spectropolarimeter and the AEOS 3.67m telescope on Haleakala, Maui. We observed atypical polarization spectra that changed significantly in the few hours after the impact. The polarization is sensitive to the geometry, size and composition of the scattering pa...

One of the goals of the Hubble Space Telescope program to observe periodic comet 9P/Tempel 1 in conjunction with NASA’s Deep Impact mission was to study the generation and evolution of the gaseous coma resulting from the impact. For this purpose, the Solar Blind Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys was used with the F140LP filter which is sensitive primarily to the ultraviolet emission (≥...

Radio observations of comet 9 P / Tempel 1 with the Australia Telescope facilities during the Deep Impact

We present radio observations of comet 9P/Tempel 1 associated with the Deep Impact spacecraft collision of 2005 July 4. Weak 18-cm OH emission was detected with the Parkes 64-m telescope, in data averaged over July 4 to 6, at a level of 12± 3 mJy km/s, corresponding to OH production rate 2.8 × 10 molecules/second (Despois et al. inversion model, or 1.0× 10 /s for the Schleicher & A’Hearn model)...

Thermal evolution and activity of Comet 9 P / Tempel 1 and simulation of a deep impact

We use a quasi 3-D thermal evolution model for a spherical comet nucleus, which takes into account the diurnal and latitudinal variation of the solar flux, but neglects lateral heat conduction. We model the thermal evolution and activity of Comet 9P/Tempel 1, in anticipation of the Deep Impact mission encounter with the comet. We also investigate the possible outcome of a projectile impact, ass...

The Deep Impact encounter with the nucleus of 9P/Tempel ejected small grains (a . 10 μm) into the comet’s coma, evidenced by thermal emission from small dust grains at mid-infrared wavelengths (λ ∼ 10 μm) and dynamical simulations of optical images. Meteor-sized particles (a & 100 μm) ejected by the impact will likely have the lowest ejection velocities and will weakly interact with solar radia...
